How to Apply for Medicare
Applying for Medicare doesn't have to be complicated. Whether you're just turning 65, receiving disability benefits, or getting benefits from social security, knowing when and how to apply will make the process smoother. Here's what you need to know:
You need to sign up for Medicare during your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP), which starts 3 months before you turn 65, includes the month you turn 65, and ends 3 months after the month you turn 65.
If you are receiving Social Security benefits, you may get Medicare Part A automatically. You will need to sign up for Medicare Part B when you turn 65.
Those not receiving social security benefits need to actively apply for Medicare through the Social Security Administration.
To enroll in Medicare, you need to understand Medicare Part A and Part B. Part A covers hospital insurance, and Part B covers medical insurance. You can also consider Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C) for additional benefits. Here's a quick guide:
Medicare Part A: Generally, you do not pay a monthly premium if you or your spouse paid Medicare taxes while working.
Medicare Part B: You will pay a monthly premium for Medicare Part B. Make sure to enroll during your IEP to avoid late enrollment penalties.
Medicare Part C: Also called Medicare Advantage Plans, they often include Part A, Part B, and sometimes prescription drug coverage.
We recommend you answer a few questions to find the right Medicare plan for you. Consider your healthcare needs and budget when choosing between Original Medicare, also known as Parts A and B, or a Medicare Advantage Plan (also called Part C). Factor in:
Doctor visits and specialist needs
Hospital stays and treatments
Prescription drug coverage
Additional benefits like dental, vision, and hearing
Understanding the enrollment period to sign up for Medicare can save you from penalties. Here’s what to keep in mind:
Initial Enrollment Period: 3 months before you turn 65, includes the month you turn 65, and 3 months after that month.
If you miss your IEP, you might have to wait until the General Enrollment Period (January 1 to March 31) and face a late enrollment penalty.
Late Enrollment Penalties: Failing to sign up when first eligible can lead to lifelong premium increases.
If you’re already receiving benefits from Social Security or the Railroad Retirement Board, you might automatically get Medicare Parts A and B. However, if you're not receiving these benefits, you'll need to sign up yourself. Here are the steps:
Contact the Social Security Administration to apply for Medicare.
If you are getting disability benefits, you may also become eligible for Medicare earlier, particularly if you qualify due to ALS or another disability.
If you're not automatically enrolled, make sure to apply for Medi
