Medicare Enrollment Periods

Understanding Different Medicare Enrollment Periods

Medicare enrollment periods can be confusing, but it’s crucial to understand them so you can get the right Medicare plan. Whether you are looking to enroll in Medicare for the first time or make changes to your current Medicare advantage, knowing these periods will help you make informed decisions.

The Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)

The Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) is the first time you can apply for Medicare. This period lasts for seven months, starting three months before you turn 65, your birth month, and three months after. During this time, you can enroll in Medicare part A and part B, sign up for original Medicare, and join a Medicare advantage plan.

The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)

The Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) runs from October 15 to December 7 every year. During this open enrollment period, you can make changes to your Medicare coverage. You can switch from original Medicare to a Medicare advantage plan, enroll in a Medicare advantage with drug coverage, or join a different Medicare advantage plan. This is also the time to enroll in a Medicare prescription drug plan if you haven't done so yet.

The General Enrollment Period (GEP)

If you missed your initial enrollment period, you can sign up for Medicare during the General Enrollment Period (GEP), which runs from January 1 to March 31 each year. You can enroll in Medicare part A and part B during this time, but you might have to pay late enrollment penalties. Coverage begins on July 1 of the same year.

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (OEP)

The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period is another opportunity to make changes to your Medicare advantage plan. Running from January 1 to March 31, this period allows you to switch to another Medicare advantage plan, or go back to original Medicare. You can also join a Medicare prescription drug plan during this time.

Medicare Supplement Open Enrollment Period

The Medicare Supplement Open Enrollment Period is a six-month timeframe that starts once you sign up for Medicare part B. During this period, you can buy a Medicare supplement plan without undergoing medical underwriting. This period is crucial if you want to ensure you get the best coverage without any restrictions.

Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs)

Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs) allow you to enroll in Medicare or make changes to your Medicare coverage outside the usual enrollment periods due to specific life events. If you lose your current coverage, move to a different area, or qualify for Medicaid, you might be eligible for a special enrollment period.

Automatic Enrollment

Many people with Medicare are automatically enrolled in original Medicare if they are already receiving Social Security benefits when they turn 65. If you are automatically enrolled, it's essential to review your options and decide whether to stick with original Medicare or sign up for a Medicare advantage. Don't forget to consider a Medicare advantage plan with drug coverage if you need prescription benefits.
